In 2009 a modular building was completed in the Waynesville location. This 2,200 sq. ft. building was completely funded by the Janirve Foundation, the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, and an individual donor. It is now the primary office for medical care and administration. The former building is being used for mental health services.
In July 2009 the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust awarded GSC a two year grant for $99,000 to fund therapy visits for uninsured patients.
Economic Downturn Shapes Clinic
The Good Samaritan Clinic faced many challenges in 2009. The annual Valentine’s Day fundraiser event was down by $3,000 from 2008. In April 2009 Haywood County Government and the Town of Waynesville announced that they were cutting nonprofits from their upcoming annual budgets and funding was suspended. The United Way of Haywood County suffered decreased donations and this decrease meant less funding for GSC.
Individual and church donations were down by mid-year and the decision to cut services in the Waynesville location was made in June 2009.
“The decision to cut services by 40% in our Waynesville location was hard but there were outstanding expenses due to lack of funding that needed to be taken care of.” explained Donda Bennett, Executive Director.
Several businesses and civic organizations held fundraisers to assist GSC. After three months the clinic was able to catch up on past due bills and resume regular patient hours.
In October 2009 GSC participated in a combined fundraiser with another nonprofit, Mountaintop Healthcare. The fundraiser netted over $10,000 for the clinic.
GSC finished the year in good financial standing due to the generosity of the community, businesses, individuals and churches.
